SummaryResponse to Intervention (RTI) is not just for elementary schools. Many middle schools and high schools are implementing it as means to provide intervention for students that are struggling and also as a means to provide enrichment time for the students. RTI is a 3 Tiered approach, but most high schools including WHHS will be using Tiers 1 and 2.
Tier 1: High-Quality Classroom Instruction, Screening, and Group Interventions Tier 2: Targeted Interventions The necessary components for the Intervention Period to be successful - Interventions (Tiers 1 & 2), Assessment, and Parental Involvement. Test scores and graduation rates have shown growth at WHHS, but we still lag behind when compared to surrounding counties and the state average. There are many high schools nationwide and locally that have Intervention Periods. Each are implemented differently and have different names, but the all serve the same purpose - improving student learning through remediation and enrichment activities. SOAR at WHHS will not begin until the 11th day. The first 10 days will be spent in Homeroom, where teachers will be teaching students about this new program.
SOAR will take place everyday between 2nd and 3rd period and is 40 minutes long. Attendance will be taken on Google spreadsheet. All teachers will be participating in SOAR through remediation, sponsoring an enrichment activity, or assisting where needed. Have you met the goals of this module? 1. Briefly explain the background of RTI 2. Explain what an Intervention/Enrichment period is 3. Understand the role of the teacher in this process 4. Explain some of the reasons why SOAR is being implemented 5. Understand the daily intricacies of the SOAR period |
- How will this help our students?
- I now have my planning period to plan.
- Finally, I have extra time for an enrichment project.
- Aren't interventions just for elementary schools
- I can now tutor those students who can never stay after school.
- Students will longer miss my club meetings due to extracurricular activities.
- Now my students have the time to study quietly or work in study groups in study hall.
- What are we going to do to improve learning opportunities for students???
